Little match girl brought to life

The festive season isn’t completely over yet, and when one thinks of classic Christmas tales, Hans Christian Andersen’s stories come to mind. One of his most famous tales The Little Match Girl finds a temporary home at Limassol’s Old Vinegar Factory for two performances.

On Thursday and Friday, Katerina Loura, Kostantinos Dimitriou, Loizos Papageorgiou and Andrea Michalopoulos revive the tale through song, dance and piano music hoping to bring the essence of Christmas “light, love and warmth to people’s hearts and souls”, even though the main day has passed.

The tale has at its focal point a poor girl who on New Year’s Eve is trying to sell matches to passers-by to help her family, but is ignored by everyone. She passes by illuminated Christmas window displays and decorated living rooms, but people send her away. To avoid the cold, she finds a corner of the street and lights up her matches one by one to warm up in their flames. In the brief, few moments when the flame of the match is lit, she sees visions of festive tables, Christmas trees, and her tender mother and her beloved grandmother, who, while they were alive, would swamp her with love and goodness.
